Archives April 2020 April 25, 2020 - "Greenhouse Revamp" We are completely revamping our greenhouse area at this time. We are laying weed barrier in the whole fenced in area. The greenhouse will be reinforced as we get a lot of strong wind in our area. Here are some in work pictures. April 21, 2020 - "It's Coming". Let’s chat a moment about security for your resources in the event of an infrastructure break-down. The clues leading to such a breakdown are written on the wall. There are many reasons why a breakdown can occur. We are quickly falling behind the other nation’s in our preparedness levels, and we could be literally left in the dark at any time. I once took an emergency preparedness class in water supply security and it isn’t encouraging. We are very vulnerable with our both our food and water supplies. A crafty nation could sabotage both with little difficulty. April 13, 2020 - "Frugal Uses for Tin Cans" Over a number of years, a family can accumulate a considerable collection of empty tin cans. The average family will use at least two canned products for each meal. Each day empty tin cans find their way to the trash bin, however with the resent pushed for recycling, and more people going green, reusing these products make very good sense. The usual appeals for a used can are in the craft area, where they are employed as a sort of storage compartment for various supplies. Read more April 13, 2020 - "Making New Bars of Soap from Used Stubs" Have you ever taken stock of all those small stubs of soap which frequently end up accumulating uselessly in your shower stall, doomed to never be used again? Why not give those unwanted used bars of soap a new lease on life? This idea is a great money saver and an excellent way to make fresh soap from leftovers which would usually be tossed in the trash. Who knows what this virus will do towards obtaining bars of soap and other necessities? This process is generally referred to as hand milling. Although I am an active gun carrier, often times it may become impossible to utilize any sort of weapon during an emergency situation even if you have one nearby. I would however, recommend that you store them in some sort of pest proof container such as a five gallon plastic bucket with a lid. This will prevent mice from getting to your food. April 7, 2020 - About one week ago we visited several grocery stores and much tpo our surprise they were completely out of yeast. We eventually found some however if we had not we could have made some from a potato. The recipe is listed below.
April 6, 2020 - For long term storage of flour, use 1/2 gallon mason jars. Each 1/2 gallon will hold 2.5 lbs of flour. So today, we purchased 4 boxes of 6 ~ 1/2 gallon jars. To our surprise, we discovered that we need more jars. We have 2 ~ 25 lb bags, and 10 ~ 5 lb bags along with 5 lbs of pie/pastry flour, and 5 lbs white rye flour. In addition, there are 5 lbs of dark rye. In the 1/2 jars we also store dehydrated cabbage. This week we bought 25 lbs of white sugar and 2 ~ 7 lb bags of brown sugar, 7 lbs of confectioners sugar...all to go in mason jars. April 6, 2020 - "Dehydrating Lemons and Oranges" My wife and I occasionally like to have a glass of Sangria in the evening with our meals and usually make a “Doctored-up” version rather than using the general run of the mill Sangria straight from the bottle. With the increased threat of a lock-down due to this virus, we decided that we needed a reliable source of lemons and oranges for our sangria, so we dehydrated them. April 4, 2020 - Here is a video on how to make "Fake" Lobster. I actually had some and its not bad. If you have ever eaten Sea-legs before it has the same taste. I prepared mine with number 1 thin spaghetti made with butter and garlic. It was excellent.
