Archives October 2020 October 31, 2020 - "How to identify two harmful spiders" We all have sat back in our easy chair and watched the reruns on the discovery channel as they show dangerous spiders from around the world. The quality of their shows is always above reproach. Let us suppose you were given two glass containers which had one spider in each. Your job would be to decide which spider was safe and which one was poisonous. In such a life and death situation you can count on biology to come to your rescue. It is through biology that you can distinguish which of the spiders are poisonous and which one is harmless. I am not going to go into the long scientific nomenclature for this chemical agent however it will be sufficed to state that it is an odorless and colorless liquid which is soluble in water. This fact alone makes this compound a lethal nerve agent which is extremely toxic. 2020 - "Catch And Cook: 450 Million
Year Old Living Fossil - Horseshoe
Crab" The original plan was to do
some Blue Crabbing. This would give
me a break from fishing and I would
also be able to clear out some fish
carcasses from my freezer so I could
get some ice cream. Unfortunately,
the Blue Crabs were nowhere to be
found. Fortunately, a cooperative
Horseshoe Crab cruised by and
volunteered to be in my video.
Horseshoe crab fossils have been
found in strata dating back 450
million years ago. The only place
that I have seen these eaten were in
South East Asia. One of the common
recipes seen at the markets was a
Horseshoe Crab salad (Yam kai meng

Horseshoe Crab, dig out the roe and
fat and mix with Thai Mango salad.
This is all put back into the shell
of the crab. Bon Appetit. October 30, 2020 - "Drying Ground Beef" As I was wandering around on the internet I chanced upon a website where the writer was explaining how to dehydrate ground beef. As I ventured to a few of the survival blogs, and previewed the postings that people were making, I was totally surprised at what I found. I personally see several downfalls with such an idea as this, however, to each their own, but that is merely my own personal opinion. October 13, 2020 - "The Aftermath of Using Deadly Force" At the Concealed Handgun Licensing classes, I’ve taught for years, I often throw out the old “What would you do in x, y, z situation?” question to students. And just as often, I’ve been amused and appalled at the responses. I then try to explain that, depending on the situation, what we think we will do and what we actually end up doing may be two totally different things. Simply put, every situation is different. That plus your experience and amount of training will dictate to a large degree the choices made. And the choices made in those critical few seconds have major implications in more ways than people realize. October 10, 2020 - "Encryption Codes for Family Safety" I have recently been reviewing all that I know about the “One-time pad” as used in decryption. This was a popular method employed by NSA, and assigned a code name of “DIANA”. There was a general-purpose pad designed with codenames “CALYPSO”, “ORION”, “MEDEA”, and “MICKEY MOUSE” as well. There were several automatic systems that were specially created by the NSA for the CIA, and Special Forces units. To provide a quick overview of the One Time Pad, it is an encryption technique which generally cannot be cracked, however, it does require a one-time pre-shared key. With this technique, a plain text is paired with a random secret key where each character of the plaintext is encrypted by simply combining it with the corresponding character from the pad. This system was popular with both NSA, and the Russian KBG. Naturally, like in any spy drama the paper that the pads used was highly flammable, and could readily be disposed of after use. Even NSA, and KBG cannot decipher the message without the proper pad being used. October 8, 2020 - "Child Lost Not Mine" My wife and I went to North Carolina to visit my youngest son this past week and while at his home I noticed that my son’s eldest daughter, Brooklyn showed an intense interest in survival techniques. To me this is great, as I am a firm believer in children learning how to take care of themselves in emergency situations. One never can tell when a disaster or a dangerous situation will develop. Keeping that clearly in mind I started thinking that I do not write enough survival articles directed and related to children. There just may come a time when your child does not have you or another adult available to watch out for them and the skills, they learn today will prove life-saving. To that end I now plan to take more interest in educating the children while developing a mini series of survival skills for kids. As my first article in these genera, I plan to show how a child can take a common analog watch and using the sun extract directions from it. These conveys are loaded with people who refuse to take “No” for an answer and they have openly threatened to illegally enter our country whether they are invited or not. To me that is an act of aggression. We see gun legislation being lobbied into law in all our nation’s states. October 5, 2020 - "Solar Options for Survival" I have recently been toying with the possibility of using solar power in emergency survival situations.
