Archives November 2020 November 30, 2020 - "Gobble Up Some Turkey Jerky" Ground turkey jerky has become my favorite munching snack. It’s high in protein, lightweight, and so, so tasty! It’s so good, I eat it on the trail and at home. I think jerky is fun food… a good jerky has enough spice that it bites back a bit. It makes you want to go, “ARGHHH!” and make pirate faces. Go on, you know you want to try it… nobody’s watching. If they were only ever able to solve that question, they will surely have all the needed funds necessary to accomplish each of their goals over the upcoming years. Manatees in Florida might need to be saved, and the rare White Lions found in Africa are certainly in short supply, and should be protected, however the burning question is still, why do people who do not know these creatures donate their hard-earned money in support of their cause? Perhaps it is nothing more than to feel good about themselves, after all human beings are inherently empathetic. I transported them home and immediately placed them in a plastic Ziploc bag and deposited them in the refrigerator. These little guys must have been well hidden, since they escaped our detection until just recently. Almost one year later, we rediscovered our neglected seeds, and deemed it would be appropriate to plant them now. Several of the collected seeds were burgeoning with roots, thus demanding to be planted. Being prepared is the main key to survival and the only means by which we can obtain this necessary proficiency is to practice. Every time we execute a practice exercise, we discover that we have forgotten something or we recognize that we need to add something to our BOB or to the BOV. This is not a predominantly lethal dilemma At this time! It could very well be if we were in an actual situation. Read more November 29, 2020 - "Homemade Bouillon Cubes" BOUILLON! I love saying that word. It brings me back to my days in High School French class, with our hilarious, Freud-obsessed teacher, Mrs. Adler from Marseilles … but I digress. When you’re out hiking, do you like having a cuppa something hot when you get to camp? I do! When I worked as an instructor for Outward Bound in Colorado, we’d get a stove going as soon as we found camp, to prepare a hot cup of soup for everyone before dinner. It was a nice way to get some extra hydration and electrolyte salts in after a long day on the trail. And being handed a cup of something warm, tasty and nutritious as you set up camp was just, well, nice. November 27, 2020 - "Window and Door Security" One of the first things which we did upon moving our possessions into the home was to have all the locks changed on the doors. This act came to a whopping $103.00 just to ensure that the old occupants, who claim they did not have a key cannot get into the house. LOL right, there are no locks that can keep dishonest people out. Being a prepper, and a survivalist, I am especially concerned with the topic of security. I take nothing for granted. It will often take only a single kick to force open one of the modern residential doors. I had previously spent a vast number of hours exploring the web gathering as much information on home security as I could. Case in point was where someone, had gained entry into the home via an air conditioner that was installed into the one window. Needless to say, the AC was taken and its where-abouts were unknown. Guaranteed it will not happen again. Sadly, these nut packages only seem to be available during the holiday season. November 26, 2020 - "Is there a walkie talkie in your survival kit?" We all can remember those times in our youthful days when we would have an inexpensive set of walkie talkies and try to speak back and forth with a friend several houses down the street. If you notice I said try for most of the time the walkie talkies that we had available were scarcely sufficient to get from one room to another in our home. This provided a very nasty taste in my mouth towards these electronic devices for many years afterwards. Here at Rabbit Run Mini-Farm we have an abundance of rabbits and deer. These are relatively harmless creatures whose only crime will likely be to eat our vegetables, and destroy our garden. On the other hand, we have also encountered some common run of the mill snakes. Although I personally do not care for the slithering things they are in general harmless as well. November 23, 2020 - "Maybe Nothing Will Happen" hat if we do what all good preppers do, and prepare for the inevitable? What if we have a year’s supply of food stored up and nothing terrible ever happens? Is this merely a waste of our time and money if that suspected disaster, or calamity never takes place? Before I answer that question let me relate my Y2K situation to you. As the turn of the century approached, I was more than prepared for anything that might happen. I had gone out and purchased a huge Airstream motor home, stocked it with food and supplies and at the last minute I filled it with fresh water. December 31st arrived and I retreated to the motor home to watch the news, eat some canned lobster and drink a glass of New Year’s wine. Their numbers were quickly reduced as a result of famine, forced labor, epidemics involving contact with European diseases, and wars. Read more
November 3, 2020 - "Understanding Quarantine and Isolation" Today we have been experiencing many different, and strange diseases some of which science has no understanding of. It is very likely that if such an illness where to surface within our neighborhood that the federal government, or even the state for that matter, would either place us in a quarantine status, or isolate us from the rest of society. Although this response may not be conducted out of malice, but rather for the safety of the population as a whole, it still does not make us a happy survivalist. If and when this would take place, it would behoove us to understand a little bit about what quarantine and isolation actually is. Read more November 2, 2020 - "Native American Fox Walk and Wide-Angle Techniques" I have always said that we could increase our survival knowledge by learning, and observing some of the skills practiced by the Native Americans. I have always pushed myself to my limits on learning new, and different techniques, therefore, I was more than willing to try any sort of hidden knowledge that I could learn from the various Indian tribes. The knowledge leaned from them proves once again that knowledge is power. Although skills such as basket weaving, and other domestic traits would be certainly appreciated, I was at that time more concerned with the security aspects of their primitive life. My goal was to analyze, and inspect the ways that this early American population armed, and defended themselves against aggressive foes. When the SHTF it will not be like attending a Boy Scout Camp, things are going to get down, and dirty. Many will freeze to death in the winter, while dying of heat stroke in the middle of summertime. We would like to hope that these techniques would be an unlikely scenario that the average survivalist would never need to employ, but it would not hurt in the least to learn it. Unfortunately, like many good skills, we often find that the methods used for a particular action has been lost in time. The key is to remain still as even with today’s modern drones the mere act of standing still makes it difficult for them to see you. It is usually your movement along with the IR heat signature which reveals where you are located. If you simply sit still and wrap yourself in one of the emergency aluminum, heat reflecting blankets the chances are low that a drone will detect your location. Even better is to go to any military surplus store and request to purchase what is known as a “Woobie.” The clerk will likely hand you a camouflaged nylon blanket. Take this blanket and sew the aluminum blanket to its back. You are now completely camouflaged from both IR detection and the human eye. If you are dressed in military cammies you will in effect be invisible as long as you remain still. November 2, 2020 - "Anyone can store up on their favorite foods" The going joke around our family is the thought of “going shopping” in our food storage room. We have a 10-foot square room dedicated to food storage and nothing else. Right now, the room is overflowing with quart and pint jars, purchased food in cans, and quart/pint mason jars of home canned products. Some of the food is in the form of dehydrated products both commercially bought in number 10 cans along with those that my wife and I have dehydrated ourselves. We never toss food into the trash basket. What we do is dehydrate it and store it in quart mason jars. The jars are labeled with the product name and the date it was made. If you plan to do likewise be sure not to cook your foods with any sort of oil or butter otherwise it will go rancid. These were men who would stand up for their country, and what it stood for. They took a stand whether it was against a foreign aggressor, or a homegrown persecutor. The little man’s dignity, and value were deemed worthy of our plight, and concern. Nowadays it’s almost as if our people don’t care, or they have lost that American backbone from past years.
